The Karma of Referrals: Give and Ye Shall Receive

By Jackie Mendelson, JNET Chairperson

Is it me, or is this year flying by? Pretty soon it will be time to carve the turkey or tofurkey and give thanks for our fortunate lives, our families, and our friends. On behalf of the JNET National Board of Directors, I thank all our members for participating in our chapter meetings and for showing your support to each other professionally and personally.

Business is the main reason that prospective members cross the threshold of our chapter meetings. They listen to our Raves and Reviews and get a sense of action and the success that JNET members are having. They hear people giving and getting referrals and actual business that adds to their bottom line. At some chapter meetings the testimonials go on for 10 to 15 minutes.

Yet, sometimes we hear feedback from a former member like “I was not getting any business so I decided not to renew my membership.” We then have asked, “How many referrals did you make to other JNET members while a member? Is your financial advisor, insurance agent, real estate agent, graphic designer, or other service provider a JNET member as a result of joining JNET?” Usually the reply was that they did not refer many people nor did they personally utilize the resources available that other members have to offer.

Networking and building relationships does take time, and we strongly encourage members to do business with each other in order to benefit from JNET’s vast membership. Unlike many networking groups, JNET does not keep a record of how many referrals our members make or how much revenue has been produced because of JNET referrals. But we don’t imagine people are coming to chapter meetings for the hummus, celery sticks, and comradery.

Please make a personal assessment of the support you have shown to other JNET members. If you honestly have fallen short in putting your fellow members first when asked about resources or looking for services yourself, please make an effort to do so. It can only help you and other JNET members and would certainly be serving the mission of JNET.

REMINDERS:

The “Needs and Opportunities” Forum is a good place to ask for referrals, but JNET members should be the people you refer! If there is not a JNET member who can fulfill the need, please email your outside referral to the person asking rather than posting your reply on the Forum.

Member profiles are on the website to help people learn more about you and contact you to give you their business! If you have a profile that is incomplete, you cut in half your chances of getting business from JNET members. If you are an attorney but do not clearly state the type of law you practice, how will anyone know that you are the right one for them? Learn how to update your Member Profile in the Frequently Asked Questions section below.

One business per membership is the rule at JNET. Do not make your 30-second introductions a smorgasbord of everything you do to earn a living. If you are an enthusiastic businessperson with different lines of business, you can buy a membership for each business. You still can only give a 10-minute presentation two times in 12 months, but you can discuss your different businesses at the chapter meeting. Otherwise, pick just one business and stick to it.

Remember that you will get out of JNET what you put into JNET.

JNET in the News

Congratulations to Cathie Ann Lippman, MD (JNET Santa Monica) of The Lippman Center for Optimal Health, who was a guest on Del and Debi’s "Mind Body Soul and Everything in Between" LA Talk Live radio show on November 1. Dr. Lippman discussed her holistic approaches to getting and staying healthy. Click Here to watch or listen to the program on YouTube.

JNET’s latest "How Jews Schmooze" ad appeared in the October 21-27 issue of the Jewish Journal (page 50). Thank you once again to Judy Robitschek for designing our eye-catching ad campaign, which always attracts many newcomers to JNET meetings.

Involvement Opportunities

Volunteering is the best way to get to know (and get known by) JNET’s leaders and members and to strengthen personal and business connections. Please consider lending a little of your time, energy, and expertise to the growth and success of JNET by taking one of the chapter positions available or considering what you can contribute to our organization on the committee or Board level. You can assist with PR or the functionality of our website, help chapters fill their speaker slots, be on the Social Committee and help plan our mixers—or fill a void that is yet to be discovered.

The Bel Air, Tarzana AM, Thousand Oaks, and Westwood chapters each are in need of a Public Relations/Eblast Coordinator. The position involves adding meetings to the online Calendar, creating flyers, emailing meeting notifications, and posting information on social media and online bulletin boards. No previous PR experience is necessary, though good writing and computer skills and attention to detail are a must. In addition, Tarzana AM and Westwood both have an opening for a Membership Coordinator, who heads the team of greeters at meetings and facilitates member signups and renewals. Training will be provided. For more information, contact JNET Bel Air President Sandy Rosenholz at 818-359-2125 or BelAir@jnetonline.org, JNET Tarzana AM President Phil Blum at 323-823-2479 or TarzanaAM@jnetonline.org, JNET Thousand Oaks President Steve Marche at 805-374-6000 or ThousandOaks@jnetonline.org, or JNET Westwood President Barry Sikov at 310-476-9720 or Westwood@jnetonline.org.

If you are interesting in serving on a JNET committee, please contact Judi Lirman, Chair of the Nominating Committee, at 818-939-7098 or JudiMFT@gmail.com.
